Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback), her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's early TV appearances. However, her parents did not want her to pursue acting until she became an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry, who was too shy to be a part of the theater in her high school, started to act in the theater at Northwestern University because she wanted to meet new people. Perry made her debut in New York after graduation, landing minor roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But homesickness made Perry return to California to work as an actress in the theater. Perry's mother and I appeared on Broadway with her as part of The Other Place, in 2013. The show featured her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 at The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played a part in nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family during 2016. In 2017, Perry played a supporting role in ABC's thriller about politics Scandal in which her father was the main character. That same year the actress was selected to play a young model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again as a teen version of her mother's. She was cast in the role despite having a close familial connection to the character.
